A Kolkata-based space technology start-up, Sisir Radar, has repurposed advanced spy and surveillance satellite technology to detect mosquito breeding, addressing the challenge posed by these insects during the summer and monsoon seasons.

Mosquito breeding, often concealed in water bodies, presents difficulties in detection using conventional satellite and drone methods.

However, Sisir Radar has leveraged high-end hyper-spectral imaging technology to identify mosquito larvae in containers and water bodies. Equipped with custom-made cameras, drones were employed to capture images from a height of 15 meters, equivalent to a five-storied building in Kolkata.

In a statement, Sisir Radar announced the successful detection of mosquito larvae through hyperspectral imaging. They conducted experiments by placing clean water and larvae-infested water in earthen and transparent plastic tumblers. The obtained results are expected to contribute significantly to the precise identification of mosquito larvae sources, enabling targeted insecticide spraying.

Tapan Misra, renowned for his contributions to India's spy satellite program and the founder of Sisir Radar, highlighted the significance of this research in combating mosquito-borne diseases. He emphasized the indiscriminate nature of current insecticide spraying methods, leading to environmental damage. By targeting mosquito larvae, this technology aims to reduce mosquito-related fatalities, benefiting both the environment and public health.

Misra's expertise in synthetic aperture radar imaging, demonstrated during his tenure at ISRO, underscores the potential of high-end remote sensing in societal applications. Despite challenges in his career, including a transition to a Senior Advisor role at ISRO in 2018, Misra's entrepreneurial journey exemplifies the adage that age is no barrier to innovation.

His life motto, "capturing the invisible," resonates with the transformative impact of advanced remote sensing technology in addressing societal challenges. Through initiatives like Sisir Radar, Misra continues to harness his expertise for the greater good.
